Question Chaintech Video Card

I am installing Debian on my computer. A window came up that says:

Configuring xserver-xfree86

For the X Window System graphical user interface to operate correctly, it is necessaery to select a video card driver for the X server.

Drivers are typically named for the video card or chipset manufacturer, or for a specific model or family of chipsets.

Select the desired X server driver. Following are the options it gave me:
  • apm
  • ark
  • ati
  • chips
  • cirrus
  • cyprix
  • fbdev
  • glide
  • glint
  • i128
  • i1740
  • i810
  • imstt
  • mga
  • neomagic
  • newport
  • nsc
  • nv
  • rendition
  • s3
  • s3virge
  • savage
  • siliconmotion
  • sis
  • tdfx
  • tga
  • trident
  • tseng
  • vesa
  • vga
  • via
  • vmware

Ok

My video card is a Chaintech XGI Volari V3 and here is a link to it Video Card on Tiger Direct.

Hi,
I am perhaps mistaken, but it reads vga on the doc for your card. You could try it.
If it does not work, vesa is the middle-of-the-road choice.

Hope it helps
cheers

Thands a lot! I'm still trying to figure this thing out. I just found a lot of documentation on it, so next time I hope I won't have such a stupid question.

The graphic chipset brand would be more important than the card brand, in this case. If its nvidia, use nv, if its ati, use ati, and so forth.

Found the driver for i386, but not sure which basic linux driver you will need for the initial install.

Thanks! But I already installed it with VGA and it works besides it only has a 640x480 resolution (I think its a setting I did wrong when I set it up) is there anything I can do to fix this? Or should I change it to VESA? If so how do I change that?

If it works with vesa, and its a temporary situation, I would not change that. Anyway, to reconfigure it, as root do:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
