What provides safely remove in nautilus menu?

Squeeze has it but my Lenny don't. How do I get it in Lenny? Makes me nervous to remove usb drives while they're still on, unmount doesn't turn the drive off.

If you unmount the device and the system reports it as unmounted, it's safe to remove it. Compare it to filling up your car: if you let go of the handle, the fuel flow stops, but there's still fuel in the hose. Yet it's safe to remove, as the flow itself has stopped

I was hoping there was a package available in Lenny repo. for download that would provide this feature for the Nautilus menu. Guess I'll just have to wait till squeeze gets closer to stable.

You can use the command "sync" to sync file transfers to the device before removing it.

That's a good idea, but sync doesn't turn off the device.
