vncserver keymapping broken


Last night i upgraded my debian etch box to the latest packages and now after i have sshed in an started vncserver I log into the vnc and try to type something and all of the keys come out wrong... (enter makes spaces for example)

anyone know what could cause this?
it's a headless server by the way.
