Upgrading GNOME

How to find out the version number of my GNOME desktop environment?
What is the command for that at the console? And also if i wish to upgrade it to latest GNOME version what is the command for that as well?

I am using Debain Sarge 3.1. I have tried typing in :
>apt-get upgrade gdm
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

This is what i get!!

Couple of things....

First, to get the version of Gnome that you are using, try the following from a command shell:

$ gnome-session --version

Also, to upgrade gnome or anything else, you may need to do the following before running apt-get upgrade:

$ apt-get update

This will update APT with the latest set of files that are available from the repository you are using.

If you want to upgrade to Gnome 2.10, then the "testing" repositories has it. Since Sarge is frozen, you wouldn't get any further updates than the version it's frozen on.

Change your /etc/apt/sources.list to point to the "testing" repositories and then do the following as root to update your whole system to the packages available in Etch (testing).
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
