Question Uninstall - a clean start

Hi guys

I am new to Linux, have played around with installations and set-ups etc. I now want to have a clean start on my LAMP inc. tomcat set-up. (as I messed up my Apache + tomcat connection / configuration)

What is the best may to uninstall packages, as well as getting rid of their folders !? (Apache, php and tomcat)

e.g. when using remove command, whole Apache folder is still there / then the install seems to remove packages, but also leave config files etc still in file system.

Is it recommended to just install a new packages over an old one ? "undoing previous changes"
What is the best way to clean up directories and corresponding packages !?

Best regards
Alex

"apt-get purge packagename" will also remove config files.
