Tiny Fonts In Vlc And Amule

As is a must to say, I performed a search on the topic, with 0 results.

Debian Sarge running simple blackbox (I love that window manager, do not tell me to leave it).

But VLC (Video Lan Client -wonderful media player-) and amule (wonderful stuff peer-to-peerer :-) ) show an extremely tiny fonts, (maybe less than arial 3 or even 2 points!!!), and I was just wondering if is there a way to fix it (enlarging fonts) or do I have to become blind by constantly leaning my nose to the screen in order to read the menus.....:-) :-)

Any ideas up there? Maybe some configuration file tweaking??

Thank you so much,
Juan Javier Martinez (Madrid, Spain)

I don't know it for sure this time but maybe you have to install xfonts-base-transcoded ; xfonts-100dpi-transcoded and xfonts-75dpi-transcoded.

Hope this helps,
Sabazios

Don't know how I solved it

I had the same problem too, but I don't know how I've solved it. I hoped some one would know, but because no one has given a clear answer as of yet......

Somewhere in my XF86Config-4 lies the answer... maybe something rings a bell?

Code:
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

I think only gtk1.2 apps are the problem? Just follow Sabazios3, that should work! Maybe add
Code:
apt-get install msttcorefonts
and have a look at this .

At last!!! One person that has exactly the same problem!!
I'll try the xfonts packages...

Edit:
Here is my font section of my XF86Config-4 file. I haven't tried the xfonts packages yet.
Code:
Section "Files"
FontPath "unix/:7100" # local font server
        # if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
        FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
EndSection
In your config file, you disabled the local font server... Is it a good idea?

Edit:
I've just tried the xfonts packages and it works great now!
It seems like gtk use the locale, and here they are set to fr_FR@euro, which means ISO-8859-15. And the -15 charset is in the transcoded package... Am I right?
Thanks a lot!

You don't need a X font server

You don't need most of the stuff that is in the standard XF86Config-4 file. X will load faster if you comment out all the cruft. What I find most peculiar is that you are obliged to enter the Horizsync and VertSync, while both the free nv and the non-free nvidia driver ignore this and acquire this info from the monitor. Just comment it out. Examining /var/log/Xfree86.0.log tells you what happens during X loading.
