when logging in using SARGE is there a way to get the text to 1024x768 and with color like KNOPPIX and gentoo does?
the text right after the GRUB bootloader and before the GDM.

Try adding "vga=788" to the kernel line in grub.conf. This will set up the text sizes but you'll need to modify your startup scripts to get the colours.

grub.conf is usually a symlink to /boot/grub/menu.lst and not necessarily present. Try to edit menu.lst instead as root.
