SSH in Debian Sarge

I have Debian Sarge installed.

I am trying to ssh to my school's server and for some reason it just sits there.
I have all the openssh installed including client and server and I know I am typing it in right:

Code:
debian-secure:/home/secure# ssh -l username 65.116.22.xxx
I know it is installed fine because just typing ssh gives me the command and list of flags.

I also tried installing putty for linux and whenever I run it I get the output:

Code:
Unable to open connection to 65.116.22.xxx: Name or sevice not known
Just to make sure, I tried it in windows and also pinged the address and it worked just fine. So the server is up.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanx

The server is a dummy server just for the class so I could try to resolve the name.

Of course I checked the firewall. That was the first spot.

I found out I probably need to enable port forwarding so I am going to look into it.

You may need to cache the servers host key. Try logging in without -l username:

ssh 65.116.22.xxx

and you will see a message like:

The server's host key is not cached in the registry. You
have no guarantee that the server is the computer you
think it is........

Though now that I reread your post and putty said no host I am thinking dns. You certainly will have to have port 22
