sound won't work with kernel 2.6.7

One possible problem: module via82cxxx is being loaded.

I think that is the wrong module for this kernel. I think the 2.6.7 kernel wants module snd-via82xx.

I tried to unload the via82cxxx module with rmmod, but an error message saying the kernel is busy.

The snd-via82xx module seems to load, but the sound still doesn't work.

#apt-get install sndconfig

run sndconfig

#adduser <your_user_name> audio

logout/login

#apt-get install aumix

run it to adjust volume and pcm settings

Thanks for the reply, but it didn't work. sndconfig gave me this error message:

You don't seem to be running a kernel with modular sound
enabled. (soundcore.o was not found in the module search path).
To use sndconfig, you must be running a kernel with modular
sound, such as the kernel images shipped with Debian Linux or
a 2.2 or greater kernel.

it looks you have to recompile and enable sound in your custom kernel, or not?

This is just a shot in the dark, but when I had ALSA problems I did a quick google search and found out that with some sound cards discover may conflict with ALSA. In such cases adding the line:

skip [your_sound_card's_module]

to the end of /etc/discover.conf and rebooting computer should fix sound problems. In my case this turned out to be the solution I was looking for.

I got it. Just had to run alsamixer.
