Setting environment variable Lenny did not worked in .bashrc 2.6.26-2-xen-amd64

For a "grail" software installation
I had set GRAILS_HOME in .bashrc of root
Code:
 export $GRAILS_HOME=/root/grails/
I logged out and logged in again.
and did
Code:
 echo $GRAILS_HOME
I got a blank line in output
Code:
echo $GRAILS_HOME
Now where do I set my path in it?
using on Lenny
2.6.26-2-xen-amd64
