Hello, I am kind of new to linux, I have only adminned systems for a year now, and even less time with desktop environments. I recently made the switch to debian, and I am now running debian testing in a GNOME environment. I have installed RealPlayer and Totem and when I try to run videos they both crash my xserver and I am dropped back to the console. The xserver then reloads and I need to log into gnome again.

If anyone can tell me where I might be able to find log files of these crashes, or what may be the cause of them I would be very appreciative. Many thanks in advance!

try xine or mplayer

unpack all those tarballs and stick em in /usr/lib/win32

mplayer, kaffeine, xine, etc. should find the codecs there and use them. Kaffeine plays windows media, divx, realplayer, quicktime, and more!
