PCI Scan

I just installed Debian from Knoppix. I am trying to create a dual monitor setup, only problem is I can not get the PCI for the video cards. I've tried to use: XFree86 -scanpci, but that does not do anything.

Is there any other way to get the pci scan? Or a way to get XFree86 scanpci to work?

Thanks

A reason it may not work is when I first try it gives this error:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again

So I remove, /tno/X0-lock

And if I do -scanpci no work, no anything.

I am new to linux, work on unix boxes for work but only for little webservers remotley hosted.

Code:
$ lspci
should list all the pci devices on your machine. You may have to install the pciutils package if it isn't already installed.

I might suggest the Xinerama howto also. After that, I'm afraid I won't be of much help as I've never set up a multi-head system.

EDIT: After paging through the howto, I realize now that you are probably already using it. In order to run the
Code:
$ Xfree86 -scanpci
command, the X server can't be running. You will have to kill the running X server.

As root:
Code:
# /etc/init.d/{xdm,gdm,kdm} stop
You may have to choose and only input the login manager you are actually using at the end of that line and remove the curly braces. I didn't actually try the above command as it is. Let me know if I've totally confused you.

Anyhoo, once you've dropped to the command line, login and try your -scan command. Otherwise, like I said, the lspci command works too.

Thank you that works.

Also the culry to stop all three does not work. But the Howto I was reading only said to stop xdm didn't mention to try the others.

Thanks.
