I did check the options and found that the sound button is depressed, but greyed out.

And you did try to click it anyway, right? Well, if clicking "Options --> Sound..." doesn't help, then I guess you're using Debian testing/etch where there is currently a temporary dependency problem with pysol and it's sound server: pysol-sounds needs a newer version of pysol-sound-server, which needs a newer version of python but that is currently available only in unstable, not in testing.
If this is the case, then you basically have three options to choose from:
1) Wait until testing/etch gets newer versions of python and pysol-sound-server. This shouldn't take too long and after the upgrade sounds in Pysol should start working again.
2) Downgrade all Pysol packages to the versions that are available in stable and don't upgrade them until apt-get suggests you to upgrade the pysol-sound-server package. First, remove the pysol packages. Then edit /etc/apt/sources.list changing all "testing" (or "etch") entries to "stable". Then run "apt-get update" and install the pysol packages again. Then change /etc/apt/sources.list back from "stable" to "testing" and run "apt-get update".
3) Upgrade the pysol-sound-server package from unstable repo. Change "testing" to "unstable" in /etc/apt/sources.list and do "apt-get update". Then upgrade pysol-sound-server (this should upgrade some python packages too). Then revert "unstable" back to "testing" in /etc/apt/sources.list and do "apt-get update" once again.
