Nautilus problem

I have a problem I've been messing with my sources.list file and accidently uninstalled some Gnome packages, while upgrading others (don't ask, I wanted to update Gnome). I ended up removing Nautilus and reinstalling from the CD (Libranet), and everything seems to work again, except, in Nautilus I have no icons nor any Nautilus sidepanel, so I don't have a tree panel too etc and I'm unable to use Nautilus. Any idea what can be wrong?
My last resort will be a full reinstall, but I rather not do that.

Try to install the metapackage nautilus-suggested. It contains things that are related to Nautilus, and also nautilus-extra.

For icons, perhaps the gnome-extra-icons will do. I'm not too sure of these things as I don't use Nautilus myself.

Well, first of all, can't you temporarily change the default view to "View as List" rather than "View as Icons"? That would at least give you some useablity back while you try to solve this.

You could also download and install GNOME Commander (gnome-commander), which would give you another file manager to use (and a dual-paned one, to boot).

Once you have that taken care of, I would suggest reinstalling Nautilus only-- or in fact upgrading it might even be better. Since I don't know which one you're using, try either the Woody backport version (which should be the same one you have, or a slight upgrade-- get the address from http://www.apt-get.org), or try installing only Nautilus from Sid. I have done this in the past without upgrading all the way to Sid, or upgrading the entire 2.2 install.

Or as a second-to-last resort, you could try installing GNOME 2.4 from the unofficial repository, which address you can also get from http://www.apt-get.org.

Whatever you decide to do, I would suggest installing synaptic first, to give you a GUI for APT, so that you can easily see what version numbers are on offer for the various repositories.

Hope this helps.

Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 2:
field name `ADD' must be followed by colon
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
Any idea what this means?
This is my sources.list
Quote:
# See sources.list(5) for more information

deb http://libranetlinux.com security/2.8/

And I use apt pinning so I type:
apt-get install nautilus/unstable
and i get the error as quoted above, even if i ditch the /unstable option I get the same error

Move /var/lib/dpkg/available out of the way (rename it to available.OLD or something) and run apt-get update again to force a complete update. It usually helps.

Done that, I got another error, saying the file "available" was not found.
I've also done:
apt-get -f install
apt-get clean

Nothing helped.

Try "touch /var/lib/dpkg/available" to create an (empty) file when you have removed it, then run apt-get update.

Thanks, that I didn't come up with that solution myself
Anyway, I've updated successfully to Nautilus 2.2.4 but I still have the same thing. Also when I log in Gnome I get this dialog:

Quote:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.

The last error message was:

Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
I've even updated gnome (apt-get install gnome) to unstable

Ok, I managed to get Nautilus more or less back to normal (think it was a metacity problem), but I still have a problem. Side panels work, but not my toolbar, if I select toolbar from the view menu, Nautilus goes blank. If I deselect it, I have no toolbat but Nautilus looks and acts normal.
Any ideas?

I upgraded my Gnome via apt-get to 2.4 and the toolbar problem in Nautilus is fixed now
