Seriously, there are quite a few sites mentioning the PTP_ERROR_IO error, in particular in connection with Samsung Galaxy devices (perhaps simply because they are so popular?). Seems there is a bug and a fix, see for example http://askubuntu.com/questions/87667...rk-with-ubuntu. Not sure if this is your problem, of course.
Note that before reading your post I didn't even know what MTP was, so don't expect too much insight from me, but the web is full of this stuff.
I can help with swearing in various languages though, if you want to add a little more variation. Eastern Europeans are particularly inventive.
I do have the same opinion about mtp ("what the f is wrong with mass storage device?"), with a lumia 620 here.
I have installed mtp-tools, mtpfs and gmtp. I also have thunar as my file manager. I plug the phone in, click on it as it appears on thunar's side panel and then do my transfers etc.
If anything fails, e.g. moving a file TO the phone, which is what does fail usually, I open mtp and "download" the file to the phone through it.
It is not an ideal solution, but it is a bit less annoying from what I face in windows (xp), where the phone is identified as a camera, where you have to EXPORT the files from it to the pc and so on...
