mkpasswd in Debian

Hi All:

I've installed the Debian 3.0 r5.
The command "mkpasswd" is not installed by default.
Later, I found that there is no such command.
Later, I found there is a NEW command "makepasswd".

My task, is "chang the user password by root using the shell script".
Is there any method NOT installing the command "mkpasswd" and "makepasswd" and get the task done?

Thanks.

Oh! Thanks.
However, how to use the command "passwd" in the shell script?
For example, I want to preset the password "abc" for a user.
How can I use it?

Thanks.

Hi:

I am sorry that I still don't know what to do after reading the "man passwd"

Actually, I used the command:

PASSWD=`/usr/bin/mkpasswd abc`
/usr/sbin/useradd -g staff -d home/staff/abc -m abc -p $PASSWD

to open an account for user "abc" and preset the password as "abc".

After upgrading the system to Debian 3.0, the command "mkpasswd" is missed (maybe removed from the package list).

Thus, could you pls. offer me a "more detail help"?

Thanks.
