Jessie - network/browser problem?

Since I installed Jessie I've been having intermittent problems with yahoo's webmail. Thinking it was not Jessie, I've had ATT come out and do multiple checks on my u-verse access, as well as generally raising hell with Yahoo. But, I'm starting to wonder if there's some possibility that it's with Jessie. I didn't notice the problem on Squeeze.

The problem is that when accessing email on my yahoo domain via Yahoo webmail in both firefox and chrome I get random timeouts. Sometimes it will work OK for quite awhile, and then it will just start timing out. I haven't seen the problem on any other site that use scripts. Has anyone else had this happen?

No idea what's causing this, but I've found Debian to be pretty rock solid. I do have some thoughts for testing:

Start your browser from the command line and browse as normal. This is a long shot, but perhaps useful error messages might get thrown to the terminal.

If you are using a wireless connection, use a wired one long enough for a reasonable test. If you are using a wired connection, swap out the cable with a known-good one.

Try a different browser. This is another long shot.

Boot to a Live CD of something else and use it long enough for a reasonable test.

Test your connection periodically with a ping. You might find a useful way to automate that here: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...t-availability.

Start a continuous ping of your router and see whether the connection between your computer and the router drops.

Just do one test at a time.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the ideas. I hadn't thought of using a live CD. In fact, I might just be able to swap my server/workstation with my MythTV slave (which has Squeeze) and run the slave as my workstation for awhile to see what happens. That's going to take me a couple of days to do though, as I'm pretty busy. I'll report back then with what happens.

Good luck and happy hunting. I'll be looking forward to hearing back.

I've found that 98 per cent of troubleshooting is finding the trouble. That's the part that must be done carefully and deliberately. Once you find the trouble, shooting it usually easy.

Hi frankbell et al. I'm closing this. No resolution, other than I think it's either ATT U-Verse or Yahoo, or perhaps even akamai. Anything Yahoo related is at least sometimes intermittent here. Almost everything that Yahoo doesn't have its hands on works as expected. So, I'm out of luck, really, until the hand of god fixes it in spite of these two companies.
