A Google search for phonegaim.deb also returns three irrelevant results so my assumptions are that there are unfortunately no .deb version thereof.

That's bit pitty actually, since I would bet that lot of users would like to have such package. There is actually lot more about people that can't compile the tar.gz for some errors. Pitty, well, I tried and also was hanging for few reasons in compiling. If I find time to manage it, I will sure share a .deb for our stable distro. but time is sthg else like alwasy ...
