Installing services using apt-get install *service name* Unable to locate package.

I have been unable to install certain services on my Debian virtual machine.

cpuspeed, crond, functions, ipmi, ip6tables, network, restorecond, smartd, and the list grows.

I am using the command:
apt-get install *package name*

Is this because these packages are not for Debian? If so what is the workflow to be able to tell the equivalent package for Debian? It seems so difficult to translate from say Redhat to Debian at times. Flood of info on the internet.

# apt-file search <file>

Or use the online search for file names :
http://packages.debian.org/search?se...keywords=crond
http://packages.debian.org/search?su...words=cpuspeed
keywords=cpuspeed : The package name is 'munin-node'.

You can use apt-cache to search for package names. For example
Code:
apt-cache search smart
will deliver all packages that are related to smart. The output on my Debian machine is
Code:
smart-notifier - graphical hard disk health status notifier
smartmontools - control and monitor storage systems using S.M.A.R.T.
So you can see that the appropriate package-name is smartmontools.
Sometimes this doesn't help, in that case the apt-file tool may help. This tool is not installed by default, so you have to install and initialize it first:
Code:
apt-get install apt-file
apt-file update
If I now use the apt-file utility to search for restorecond I get this output:
Code:
tobi@server:~$ apt-file search restorecond
policycoreutils: /etc/selinux/restorecond.conf
policycoreutils: /usr/sbin/restorecond
policycoreutils: /usr/share/man/man8/restorecond.8.gz
So I can see that the package policycoreutils contains the file restorecond.
