depends on how much stuff you are going to install, a bare minum install with no gui is under 300MB.

Full install w/Gui etc...

could be a gig or more depending

what size hard drive do you have?

and what do you want to do with it? server or desktop?

If you wanna do very litle beyond surf the net and read email, you'll likely get by with a 500meg drive, but I'd recommend against it. 1 gig is livable, but you'll not be satisfied for ever. If you have a 3gig drive, you'd okay as long as you aren't an mp3 collector, etc.

the biggest space consumer is your Desktop manager. If you can live with a manager such as blackbox or fluxbox you can get by with a much smaller drive. Yet if you need something more comprehensive, ie gnome or kde you will need a much larger harddrive. I would go with a minimum of 2 gig for a larger install (although as always bigger is better).

Less inportantly you need more than 12megs of ram to do a normal install. This is probably not a problem since its been a while since I've seen an 8meg chip of ram.

Enjoy

If you want both and a good cross-section of the apps that come with both, you may fill around 2 gigs. If you use one or the other, you'll likely get away with about 1.2-1.5 gigs, leaving room for installation of more stuff later.

I had Debian running on my old pentium 166 and I had KDE installed. There was a 1.6 gig drive in it and I added an 800 meg drive I had laying around. I used the 800 megger for a /home drive. I got along fine (but it was a bit slow.)
