Installation failure using live CD

I've just tried to install Squeeze on my guest partition, using a magazine disk that offered a live CD version with installer, which I ran in text-based expert mode. The process was not a success.

1. The routine for installing grub claimed (hd0,2) was the same as /dev/hda2
2. Starting Debian's grub from the Fedora bootloader with chainloader failed
3. A conventional start revealed all sorts of problems, ending with "/bin/sh can't access tty"

I can't believe Debian could produce something like that! Has anyone here used their live CD as an installer? Tell me this mess is down to Linux Format magazine!

I do not think Debian live is an official Debian CD.

My suggestion is to download this: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...86-netinst.iso

Reinstall with the netinst CD and enjoy.

That is correct....

Debian uses grub2. One of the differences with grub (1) is that partition numbering starts from 1, not 0.

Grub: /dev/hda2 -> hd0,1
Grub2: /dev/hda2 -> hd0,2

Thank you both! I never noticed it was Grub2. But even if the boot loader was never installed, that would only affect the chainloader. The disk is obviously some rubbish put together by the magazine. Why did I trust anyone who rates Debiann 6 as only 7/10 and complains it's not "cool"?

If they say Debian is not "cool", that's their right. As well as it is your right [not] to use CD they provided.
