The .deb version of Teamviewer 8 already installs a service. You cannot run Teamviewer if the service isnt started.
But i dont like the idea of letting 3rd party doors open to my system so i use the generic precompiled teamviewer that doesnt install a service (i need it to connect to other computers only).
As for remote access, i use openvpn+ssh (with optional tunneled vnc connections for access to the graphical console).
PS. If you dont own a Teamviewer license, you might encounter all kinds of irritating situations such as unable to connect, low quality graphics, big delays (even when using computers that have low latency and big bandwidth available). I lost a few times the ability to connect to computers i really needed and since i have lost my faith in teamviewer's network.
