Question i3 & MATE window manager isn't being changed to i3

Hi all.
I'm stumped, I tried installing i3 on my VM with MATE and it works fine, tiling is working in the VM. I then tried to do the same set up on my actual desktop following the same steps and it doesn't change from Marco to i3 like it did in the VM.
The steps I followed are here: https://mattgreer.dev/blog/mate-and-i3/
and the only thing I had to do different is change the ~/user/.config/i3/config file there instead of the one in /etc/.
What else do I need to change to get i3 on my actual desktop?
Code:

Login manager F1 key picks my windows environment.

I use slimski login manager.

Probably different way in your log in manager for you. It why I don't auto login.

That gives me an idea of what to search for at least.
I'm on Light DM and I don't auto login either, I have to input username and password each time.

Well . Installed LXQT in mine since I posted. Was kinda under whelmed by it so uninstalled it. Slimski handled the login OK with my F1 key.

Reading up on lightdm. Supposedly a icon shows up to pick what you want to run. After you input your login name. Let us know how you switched.

So I found the icon and put a mark in the i3 button.
Logged out chose "Default X Session" and I now have Mate &i3 running at the same time, which was what I was tying for.
Thanks for the help
