How do I insert the module and restart the network manager ?
On modprobe ipw2100, I get

Code:
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting ipw2100 (/lib/modules/2.6.18-5-686/contrib/ipw2100/ipw2100.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
And on dmesg:
Code:
ipw2100: Unknown parameter `ifname'

I think there is also a proprietary firmware piece to that driver. Google "ipw2100 debian" or "ipw2100 linux" and you'll probably find references to it as well as instructions for it's installation.

I followed the instructions for debian (step 7) on
http://jrblevin.freeshell.org/linux/ipw2100/
And yet I'm getting the error.

I suggest going through the how to again from the beginning to ensure you didn't miss any steps accidentally..

You downloaded the firmware they linked and put it in the appropriate place.., you created the alias file and named the interface, etc..

when you modprobed the driver you did it as they demonstrated, adding the name of the interface..
modprobe ipw2100 ifname=wlan0

There are a lot of steps in that how to. it would be easy to miss something small that could be a show stopper, run through it again and watch for any errors or warnings that may indicate something isn't right.

Hi,

This link refers to the ipw2200 networker but it may help you along as it seems much more user-friendly that the guide you seem to be using.

You will of course need to change the software you are downloading to get the correct stuff for your card.

farslayer, and Kirmonkey, thanks. Apparently the offending culprit was the following segment that I added /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
Code:
alias wlan0 ipw2100
options ipw2100 ifname=wlan0
It wierd, I did it according to
http://jrblevin.freeshell.org/linux/ipw2100/

I have a couple of questions.
I brought up the wireless from
Code:
modprobe ipw2100
and I'm turning if off via
Code:
rmmod ipw2100
Is there an easier way ?

Also, the network manager is now showing wireless networks, including my WPA-PSK network. I tried to log in, but it fails. Do I have to install WPA-supplicant ?
EDIT" It arealy seems to be installed.
Does failing to log in imply problem with WPA supplicant, or tha it needs to be configured ?

And finally, any way to do power management on the ipw2100 ?
