Have a look over there:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...pgrade-837542/

That thread appears to have come to a solution at the end. There are lots of links in the thread but have a look at the last post first. If you remain stuck after that thread, tell us what you've done or learned since reading the thread, and what the situation is now.

Open your sources.list
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and remove the line that starts with
Code:
deb cdrom:[Ubuntu something bla bla bla
Save and close gedit.

Optionally, update apt's list
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Then try the update again.

I have done nothing to the list except comment out unworkable entries and uncomment the backports.

I would rename your current list to "sources.list.def" and save the version above as "sources.list". That way you can always go back.

Then;
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Post results.

Why don't you do it again and post the output from the terminal. That way we can see the whole process in this exact situation.

OK, that is saying that your sources.list has changed. There was nothing usable that I commented out as it had no version name and were duplicates anyway. The list is a mess but that is not the problem here.
Code:
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
is the problem.

I do not know if you ran an update/upgrade on Update Mangler or not but something is not finished.

Just to be careful, rather than jump in with both feet, reboot to recovery and when you get to that menu run the "dpkg fix broken packages" option. This is always a safe thing to try in this type of situation. It may clear the problem.

If not get back to the recovery menu and select the "root with networking" option. Run;
[code]
dpkg --configure -a
[code]

If that does not clear it try;
Code:
apt-get -f install
You may want to remember those last 2 commands for future use. They can be run from the Desktop terminal as root or with "sudo" and straighten a lot of things out.

Going through recovery the commands have a little more power as the file system is not mounted.

When finished, success or not, and returned to the recovery menu choose the "return to normal boot" option. This will give you a text log in. Give user name and then your password. On the next prompt type startx that should put you on your desktop.

Let us know how you got on.

Well, this is not a good thing at all.

Is this a recent upgrade to 10.04? If so has this problem been happening since then.

Pull up Synaptic and click on the "status" button (bottom left on screen). Then in the left panel near the top should be the word "broken". Click on that and see what comes up.

A screen shot would be very nice.
