How to use Knoppix hardware info on Sarge?

Hi,

I just switched from Mandrake to Debian and I installed Debian Sarge on
my computer. All in all it went well, but my sound card was not
detected and my video card was not detected correctly: I have no sound
at all and my monitor only displays 800x600.

When I boot on Knoppix 3.9 the following messages appear:

Soundcard: 5880 AudioPCI driver es=1371
AGP brige detected
Video is Mach64 3D Rage IIC 3D Rage IIC AGP, using Xfree86(ati) Server
Monitor is RDS1550, H:30-63kHz, V:50-75Hz
Using modes "1024x768", "800x600", "640x480"

How can I transfer the hardware detection info from Knoppix to Sarge
and get the sound and 1024x768 to work?

Many thanks in advance,

TW

PS: just in case - here is what dmesg gives me in Knoppix:

and help it might! I will try that.

the thing is I vaguely remember a LUG meeting when somebody told me that I should do the following to use Knoppix info to configure Debian:

1) run lsmod and see what modules are loaded by Knoppix and then load them in Debian
2) copy some Knoppix generated video configuration file and simply overwrite the one Debian created with the one Knoppix created

I never tried any of this, nor do I remember the details (like this one: if I insmod the sound module detected by Knoppix in Debian, will is stay even after a reboot - or do I need to edit some file to make this module permanent. You can tell I am an ex-Mandrake with questions like that I suppose, but while I was really fed up with RPMs and I disliked Mandriva very much, I sure miss the Mandrake Control Center very much... Too bad KDE or GNOME do not really have an equivalent).

Any other ideas/comments/pointers would be most welcome.

Cheers!

1 down, 1 to go (still need help!)

I fixed my xfree86 problem. I still have to struggle with the sound issue. Here are the modules which Knoppix loaded:

What should I do now - simply insmod all the modules which look like they are sound realted and which Debian did not already load, or is there a way of finding out which module is needed for my soundcard?

Many thanks!

See if this helps;
http://wiki.debian.net/?ALSA
Just apt-get all the alsa stuff then as root run alsaconf
then unmute the sound with a mixer

not only did this help - it completely solved my problem!!

I want to mention here that I posted the same question in other fora, including some Debian specific ones, and you are the one who gave me exactly the answer I needed! I really want to thank you for helping me out.

I will stay with this forum and see if I can learn more (most likely) or maybe also help someone (-: with soundcard problems maybe :-)

Very sincerely,
