How to ensure that the complete development environment have been installed?

During installation of Debian, I was given the option to choose roles like Desktop environment, Mail server, etc. However, there isn't any option for Development environment or similar.

Is there any package I can install to ensure I have the complete development environment (for compiling of source files and kernel)?

Thanks!

Well you'll need more than one package.

I would use synaptic to look for any development packages as it is a nice gui frontend for apt, and will allow you to see all packages in a list by their type (ie office, development, multimedia etc...) and will also give a description. You won't need everything in the list but gcc, g++, are just a few to start with.

build-essential will give you the basic devel pkgs, but it certainly is by no means complete. For example, it does not include much of what is needed for kernel compilation. I really don't think there is a meta-pkg that will satisfy the prereqs mentioned by the OP.
