How to confirm if a kernel patch has been applied?

Hi, Just applied patch-4.4.1 to existing kernel 4.4.0 as follows (copied patch-4.4.1.xz to /usr/src);

Code:
:/usr/src# unxz patch-4.4.1.xz | patch -p1
Nothing happened as far as i could tell, i was returned to the prompt immediately, though without any errors. Have never done this before so i was expecting some indication of a process taking place, maybe a few queries..Did i apply the patch correctly? If so, how can i confirm it?

if I knew it well it will only patch kernel sources, you should rebuild your kernel to make it work.
If you could check the content of that patch you will be able to check kernel sources if that was applied properly.

Thanks, I was hoping applying a patch would be quicker, if it's going to take rebuilding the kernel i might as well compile the whole thing from scratch and install the new kernel instead.

Edit: Compiling didn't take so long this time, chose make localyesconfig before make menuconfig, white noise from speakers has stopped and haven't experienced any H/W locks yet.
