how to check security settings?

hi everybody
i am using knoppix 3.3 installed on hdd.also converted to testing in apt.conf file.i have few queries,as i am new to linux
a) how to check the security level or so to say am i using a firewall?
b) how do i check the availability of packages for it,say yahoo instant messenger?
c) when i use apt-get,will i be able to get updated to next versions of debian/knoppix?
thanks in anticipation.please guide me.

a) very secure, always if you haven't installed/set-up a firewall, you aren't using one
b) apt-cache search <search terms> and then apt-cache show <package name> to see the full description of the package and other traits
c) yes

like what command to be given to check the security level or so to say which package is used to configure firewall?
