How to add applications to run at startup

I loaded rcconf so I can set which programs I want to run at startup.
But I don't see some programs I want to run at startup, such as slocate. How do I add them to the startup files?

Also how do I add programs that I want to run when Windowmaker (my X windows manager) starts up....such as wmclock ?

Thanks,
Phil

See Section 2.4 at http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/re...ference.en.txt (you have to further populate your /etc/init.d and /etc/rc<R>.d directories, where <R> is the runlevel you choose to deal with).

slocate does not run on startup in the way you are thinking, it is not a service or daemon.
slocate is a cron process and can be located in your cron configuration.

if you want to manually update slocate so you can use it to search immediately, just kick off a manual update using the -u option

slocate -u

slocate will index your drive and update it's database, and you can use tit to do your searches right away. the update takes less than 30 seconds or so..

I would bet if you list the contents of your cron.daily directory slocate is listed..
ls /etc/cron.daily

and rather than rcconf, I would suggest looking at it's replacement sysv-rc-conf, quite a bit more control in the new package.

apt-get install sysv-rc-conf

as for starting wmclock when windowmaker is started, that is covered in the readme file for wmclock...
http://www.jmknoble.net/WindowMaker/wmclock/README
Quote:
Set wmclock to launch when Window Maker starts. Press the menu mouse button (usually the right one) on the portion of the docked wmclock tile that is not covered by wmclock's LED display or calendar display to bring up the dock icon menu, and choose `Settings...'. In the resulting dialog, check the box labelled `Start when Window Maker is started' and press `OK'. That's it!
