How many Debian CDs to install a fully operating system equivielent to Ubuntu?

Hi,

I wish to install Debian on my 1Ghz, 256mb desktop but don't fancy downloading 14cd images!! How many CDs do I need to install the base system with enough basic appliactions to run a normal desktop ie. equivilent to a Ubuntu 1CD install. I understand that the vast majority of the CDs includes packages that I will probably never use.

Thanks
Lee

If you have reasonable speed on your internetconnection you'd might be better off with the netinstall CD. That installs a basesystem and it asks you what you want it to download and install.

Which packages go on which cds is decided by the Debian Popularity contest...or something like that. I remember getting a debconf question asking whether I would like to participate. As Desktop Environments are very popular it is quite likely that at least the core for gnome and kde are on the first cd and quite a few of the extra kde/gnome packages are on the second. So my guess is 2 cds, but I agree with Dutch, a net install is probably the best way to go.

Yeah, I just want the usual KDE system with the usual desktop apps such as Gimp and Openoffice. I cannot use a network install as I only have access to the internet at certain times. I have a go at downloading the first three disks perhaps.
