how do I turn off dhcp and specify IP?

I know this is a total noob question, but I can't seem to find anything documentation about it.

When I installed debian (woody), I had my network setup for dhcp at boot, now that I want to turn dhcp off and give a specific ip [for] boot time I can't figure out how to do it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

i don't know how the bootup scripts run in debian, but in slackware you'd have to edit a couple of things in your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to disable the DHCP on bootup, and then add the appropriate static IP for your fixed address in that same file.

my guess is that debian has a similar file, or even better, a network configuration tool (it's "netconfig" on slack) that can be run to set this all up. try looking for "network configuration tool debian" on google.
