For a graphical login install xdm, kdm, or gdm. 'apt-get install gdm'

You need to install alsa for sound. 'apt-get install alsa-base'

You need to install the modules. I ran dpkg -l alsa-modules* and there dosen't seem to be a modules package for the 2.6 kernel. I compiled my kernel from source and built alsa support into it, since I knew I would be using alsa. You could either compile a kernel from source or complie alsa from source. You could use OSS. in the KDE control center go to Sound&Multimedia>Sound System, and under the hardware tab select Open Sound System as the audio device.
