how do i make DVD symbolic link permanent?

heya,

Problem is that I have to create the symbolic link for /dev/dvd: $ sudo ln -sf /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd, in terminal everytime I restart the computer. I am sure there is a way to make this symbolic link permanent. Can someone tell me how, or what i need to learn?

Thanks

You have to edit /etc/fstab. I don't know how to do that for a dvd but a google search with /etc/fstab + dvd will sure help

ok, I have been looking into the ftab, and I i have tried a few things. For anyone reading this, i realize u need to know more info. I am running Ubuntu 4.10 and I have a dvd/cd-rw combo drive. My movie player is MPlayer. Is there anything in the ftab i can write to stop the "Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd" error message?

Without having your fstab information, this will point you in the general direction:

I have a SLIMLINE CD-RW/DVD device.

MY FSTAB LISTS -----> /dev/hdc /cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,rw 0 0

So in /dev do:

ln -s hdc dvd

This will soft-link your CDROM/DVD to /dev/dvd.

Now, any program that is looking for /dev/dvd will automatically call /dev/hdc. This
will save having to manually configure each and every program that uses /dev/dvd
by default.

Hope that helps!

Maybe you should check (as root, do "dpkg-reconfigure discover1") if you've allowed discover to manage the symbolic links for your cdrom mount points. I seem to recall that some time ago there was a bug report against discover, saying that this function doesn't work properly.
