GRUB issues

I have a dual boot here of etch i386 and etch amd64. The i386 install is what I use normally, but when I did the amd64 install, I think I chose to install GRUB to the MBR, which is annoying because now whenever I install a new kernel I must manually edit menu.lst in the 64-bit partition.

Can I change this back, to use the i386 install's copy of GRUB?

Boot into the i386 version, and re-run grub-install from there. That should do it. You will probably have to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to add the amd64 to the menu.

Delete "probably"

But you always have to edit menu.lst when installing new OSes--why does it matter which one you edit? (The trick is remembering which one is in use)
I sometimes think that having a separate partition for grub would make sense--it could be mounted to any OS using fstab. (struggling to find the energy to pull the old p-III off the shelf and try this....)

So.....just removing and installing GRUB using APT will do the trick?

No...you don't install (or remove) GRUB with APT. There are two methods: grub-install and the grub shell.

You never need to remove GRUB. Anytime you install boot code, it simply overwrites what is there.

More detail in the "booting" link below.
