graphics card drivers for debian

hi guys, im trying to install a graphics card for my lenovo thinkcenter m72e and Im unsure if i have the right info. could anyone please give me a helping hand to make sure Im choosing the right one.

my graphics card is a MSI AMD Radeon HD 6450 2GB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low Profile PCI-Express Video Card R6450-2GD3H/LP

On some sites it says its already supported but it doesnt work in hd when I connect it. There is a pro driver for it which i think is this AMDGPU-PRO Driver Version 17.40 for Ubuntu 16.04.3 and you can see the link here https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-art...O-Install.aspx

I havent done this before so any help whatsoever would be most welcome. thank you

Sorry, this makes no sense; you say you need help 'choosing the right one'...then tell us which one you ALREADY chose?

What help do you need? You posted a link to the driver, with complete step-by-step directions. While they're for Ubuntu, that's based on Debian and they should work fine. Did you actually try any of those commands? You also don't say what version of Debian you're using, but there is ample documentation on the Debian website, again with step-by-step guides, and there are many others:
https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-insta...-stretch-linux

Again, did you try any of those things? We can only help if you tell us what problems/errors you're actually having.

hi tbone, it says that the driver is already included with debian but the card doesnt work when I place it in the slot. the computer doesnt recognise the card. i read that there is another driver for the card that is an 'accelerated' version of the debian one but I cant navigate the system. I still find it very difficult to understand to the point I am very confident of what i downloaded and installed. Ive always had this problem as you know. I spent all day today trying to get it to work and im exhausted aright now.

This is how i understand things. If it was stated like this i wouldnt have these issues.
LINUX DRIVERS FOR RADEON GRAPHICS CARD RF5558793W CLICK HERE.
To install driver please do this.... and then extract and type this into the terminal yada yada

thats what I understand. I cant find this language so I m looking for someone who understands the system to say something like this. And i know from past experiences you don't particularly appreciate my views on this. But hey, you never know.

Which is *NOT* what you said previously. You stated before that it wouldn't work in HD, implying that it DID work in lower res. Which is it?

Again, you are making zero sense. You again are saying you 'downloaded and installed' something, whereas before you only posted a link and asked for help. Again, what did you download, from where, and what did you DO????

Apparently, you would still have the issues, because the link you posted and the two that I apparently had to look up for you, ALL have step-by-step directions, with the full commands to type in and follow. Tells you what to run, how to extract things and what to do/check. In short, all the 'yada yada' you claim isn't there.

If you can't read or understand them, there isn't anything we can do to help you. All of those pages are in simple English, and aside from the commands themselves (and those you just have to TYPE IN), there isn't anything technical. No programming, no scripting. AGAIN, you are not saying where you're having a problem, what you don't understand, what you've already done/tried, and are just saying "I found instructions, help me"...without saying what you need help with. You STILL haven't said what version of Debian, despite being asked.

You have been using Linux for EIGHT YEARS now, so simple commands like cd and tar shouldn't be anything 'technical' for you. And your 'views' have zero to do with anything...when you say it's so complicated to find a download link on a webpage, there's nothing to 'view'; it just appears you're too lazy to look up the link yourself. Your time is *NOT* more valuable than mine. Past that, your previous snotty/sarcastic comments weren't appreciated either, but NONE OF THAT has any bearing on THIS thread.

You claim to be able to have it work if you have a step-by-step guide. You, yourself, PROVIDED such a guide, and I looked up two others for you. If you cannot follow them, there is nothing anyone here can do to help you. You are also refusing to answer questions when asked, and seem to be posting things that logically contradict each other.

I have checked that theres no driver already installed, i have followed the instructions to the max, i dont know what is wrong. I was more concerned that this was the right driver. I know the chipset (whatever that is) is called cairos and i located the 6000 series which i believe the 6450 would be a part of. but i still am not at a skill level or tech level where i automatically know why my terminal commands are coming back like that.

debian is unlikely to be unsupported; maybe you downloaded the wrong file.
please walk us through it with links, terminal output etc. the full monty, you should know the drill.

this card is not exactly new and was a budget card even then; i think it's very unlikely to support very high resolutions. or what exactly do you mean by "hd"?

if i were you, i'd trust that debian's free radeon driver is giood enough, and proceed thusly:
  1. make all hardware modifications first
  2. close the computer
  3. only then start installing debian
  4. leave well enough alone

...and you *STILL* DON'T tell us what version of Debian, or answer the other questions asked. Saying "I did something and it didn't work" tells us nothing. Ignoring questions repeatedly is plain rude, and if you want help, you need to participate in the conversation and follow along.

I looked up TWO how to guides (since you can't seem to), that detail using the Radeon drivers in my first reply. One even has sections for Debian 8 and 9, since you won't tell us what you have, and tell you specifically to use the Radeon driver, not amdgpu. Did you bother to read them????

Since you won't tell us what commands you're typing and what the results are, we sure can't tell you either. Answer questions asked, and again we can try to help. If you won't, there is no point in posting.

After 8 years, it's hard to believe you have NO idea what you're doing.
