Gnome won't save settings on logout Lenny

When I logout/login to Gnome, and sometimes if I stay logged in for awhile, Gnome resets my desktop settings, especially my remote desktop settings, which is how I remote into this subnet and manage the other web managed things like switches.

1. Can I statically set remote desktop (vino I think) settings so they don't change?
2. Are there any gnome applet settings I can change to keep this from happening?

Each time I log back in my desktop shortcuts, etc are reset.

It could be a file permission problem. OR, ssh may be configured to disconnect after a certain amount of time with no activity.
