gnome desktop menubar broken

I finally upgraded my home server to wheezy. The menubar is badly broken. Each time I log out, it seems like gdm doesn't get the message. When I log back in, I have one more item on the top with my userid, and the usable area on the desktop is shrinking down to nothing. At this point, the only thing available on the menubar is my userid. I can't delete any of the copies of the userid widget (whatever it's called) I can't move them over, up, down, or whatever. All I can do is login or logout. Any ideas on even where to start would be appreciated.

OK, I figured it out. With the new gnome, you have to hit alt-right click rather than just right click. So, I spent a few minutes deleting duplicate items from the panel, and panels that came out of nowhere. I have no idea how this happened, but at least I can get rid of it if/when it happens again.
