gnome application menu icons have no descriptions

Hi,

I'm using squeeze on a laptop and somewhere along the line I disabled the description that appears below icons in all gnome application menus. I don't know how I did it, and I cannot seem to find the way to undo it. I would like full descriptions under the icons in my menus. I tried System -> Preferences -> Appearance but could not find what I was looking for. I also tried System -> Preferences -> File Management. Neither seems to help me out. This is not an urgent problem, but an annoying one. Thanks in advance.

No responses. Is it that no one wants to answer or is it that no one knows what I'm talking about!? I guess an example of an app that is effected is Evolution. I think gedit is effected too. Iceweasel isn't.

There should be a Comment field in your *.desktop application launcher files in /usr/share/applications. This field provides the description for your menu items upon mouse rollover. I can't imagine how this field could have been deleted or commented out in multiple files but check it out anyway. You'll likely have to launch your editor and navigate to these files. On my system, Ubuntu, I can't open these files from Nautilus.

Cheers, Lou

It's not the rollover description, it's the description that's actually printed on the menu that's right below the menu icon (in other words "Print", "Delete", "Junk", etc.)

Sounds like you're talking about the tool bar under the menu bar. I checked mine in evolution and found that not all icons there have a description. Specifically the ones you mentioned. I do get a description if I rollover them. Don't know if possible to place descriptions there, nor how it would be done. Sorry I can't be of help.

Cheers, Lou
