Unhappy ftp/http install not working

my system does not support a cdrom, so I need to install over the network. I first tried to pull the installation across from ftp.us.debian.org but that didn't work. I then tried to pull the installation from a RH9 box that is on the same network, after I installed vsftp on it - still no luck.

The computer that I want to install linux on does have a working nic because I could ping it from the RH9 system.

As far as I know, vsftp is setup correctly, but I am not that sure - have never setup an ftp server before.

ftp to localhost from my RH9 box works fine.

thanks for any help
