Force uninstall?

Is there any way to force debian to uninstall a packge? I have tried apt-get remove -force-yes=lighttpd but to no avail.

Here is the error I am getting trying to remove via apt-get remove or dpkg -r:

Code:
gemlight:~# dpkg -r lighttpd
(Reading database ... 31327 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing lighttpd ...
Stopping web server: lighttpd failed!
invoke-rc.d: initscript lighttpd, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: error processing lighttpd (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
Sure enough /etc/init.d/lighttpd stop does not work. Instead I have to use killall lighttpd to stop the server. But even after I kill it and try uninstalling I still get the above error.

Thanks in advance..

have you tried using apt or dpkg to INSTALL it again and then try uninstalling it?
or try the --force-all option of dpkg
maybe it should be running when you try to uninstall it?
just keep futzing with it and you should get there, but I would try to get it fully installed and working THEN try removal. my2pennys
