fglrx-driver vs ATI kernel driver for ATI Radeon 9200 in Debian

Hi *,

I am using Debian SID on box with ATI Radeon 9200 graphics inside.

Do you have any experiences of using fglrx-driver vs ATI kernel drivers? What is the performance difference?

All the best,
DP

All i know is that it is not supported by default

My ATI radeon makes my system freeze on bootup when it comes to the hotplug subsystem

Whenever i choose in my bios that i'm using onboard gfx card ubuntu runs fine

If you want to play games utilizing OpenGL 3D graphics (albeit not exactly the latest ones since that card lacks a bit of oomph compared to the current-day offerings), then the ATI's fglrx driver is to prefer.
In other cases, the ati driver provided by X.Org should be good enough.

your debian sid has xorg6.8x or 6.9? You may have to do some digging to get ati9200(agp4x or 8x or pci) with fglrx working or downgrade to earlier xorg or to xf86 for fglrx to work with that card. Some troubleshooters say stop using framebuffer and enable dri or just disable dri. A vga= line in lilo or grub may be needed. There is an ATI troubleshooting guide available.Google and go thru that guide for specifics.Good luck.
