while running apt-get upgrade, after working fine for a while it terminated with following message:

Errors were encountered while processing:
glibc-doc
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

is this serious? how to fix it? was the rest of the job done allright?

Look at the output why glibc-doc did not get installed (you can try it again with apt-get install glibc-doc).

Because it is a documentation-package I assume this will got fixed in 1-2 weeks.

apt-get reported a segmentation fault. can`t reproduce the output, cause now it is not booting any more, but stops with LI in LILO.
posted a help request in Linux-Newbies.

Ouch!
This means lilo is not properly installed in your boot-sektor and the
second stage boot loader can not work.
I hope you have a linux rescue system on CD or floppy.
Then try to mount your linux partition and go this mount directory.
Become root and the do a <chroot> (look at the options with <man chroot>).
With that you can install lilo again with <lilo>.

As I can`t find my debian CDs (i`m really puzzled where they could be) and have no boot disk, I`m running knoppix. (erverything fine, except can`t type question marks)

This is what happened.
after
chroot /mnt/hda2/

----------
Knoppix:/# /sbin/lilo -v
LILO version 22.5.8, Copyright (C) 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger
Development beyond version 21 Copyright (C) 1999-2003 John Coffman
Released 10-Oct-2003, and compiled at 02:25:16 on Dec 21 2003
Debian GNU/Linux

Reading boot sector from /dev/hda
Fatal: open /dev/hda: Permission denied
-----------

maybe its knoppix not allowing access
can I create a proper boot disk with knoppix

thx bronko

Hm, but you can install Knoppix on the harddisc, so there must be a way...
I'm not sure if chroot prevents you from installing a boot record, but as I remember I have done it before. :-(

You must be root to install something in a boot record and Knoppix does
not allow this.

hmm....
still doesn't work. friend of mine told me to try

mount -o rw,remount /dev/hda2/

this did work, but had no effect on the problem.
knoppix lets me be root without asking for a password. So I ain't real root maybe?
( sitting in front of a f***in XP-Box. it makes question marks! )

the device lilo wants to reach is /dev/hda. maybe i should remount this?
(not at home yet, so can't try)

if ya know let me know

thx bronko
