dselect update question

Hi folks,

In running
# dselect update
dselect: configuration error: unknown option option: Success

What does it mean??? Can I ignore it and continue to proceed
# dselect select
# dselect install
???

# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
>>>
#deb copy:///cdrom/ sarge main

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Sarge_ - Official NetInst Snapshot i386
Binary-1 (20031118)]/ unstable contrib main

deb ftp://ftp.hk.debian.org/debian/ unstable main
deb-src ftp://ftp.hk.debian.org/debian/ unstable main

deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib

deb ftp://ftp.hk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib
deb-src ftp://ftp.hk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib
<<<

I also tried comment out follows;
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Sarge_ - Official NetInst Snapshot i386
Binary-1 (20031118)]/ unstable contrib main

#deb ftp://ftp.hk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib
#deb-src ftp://ftp.hk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib

The same result.
# dselect update
dselect: configuration error: unknown option option: Success

Or better yet, aptitude update

Dselect is evil. Don't use it. Even the debian project itself is abandoning it as the default way of installing packages in the installer (in favor of aptitude).

Hi folks,

Debian (testing/unstable)

Thanks for your advice.

I ran into problem in starting Gnome 2.4 desktop. It died immediately after login. I was advised by a folk on another forum who fixed the said proble with following commands;

# dselect update
# dselect select
# dselect install

What command lines shall I used with 'apt-get'

# apt-get update
# apt-get select ???
# apt-get upgrade ???

I encountered problem in running 'dselect update'. Several days ago it worked. After running following command lines to fix some problem on OOo1.1

# dselect update
# apt-get dist-upgrade.

Now 'dselect update' can't work.

I made following tests without result
# dselect
dselect: configuration error: unknown option option: Success

# which dselect
/usr/bin/dselect

# /usr/bin/dselect
dselect: configuration error: unknown option option: Success

# ls -l /usr/bin/dselect
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 154792 Oct 28 03:45 /usr/bin/dselect

I suggest you clear out the config file, /etc/dpkg/dselect.cfg
It looks to have some comments preventing dselect from starting.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

Oh I have been searching for 'dselect.conf', 'dselect-conf' with 'locate' and 'find' commands without results

Now I got it 'dselect.cfg = dselect.conf'

# cat /etc/dpkg/dselect.cfg
option = expert

commnet it out. Now

# dselect update
works.

What will be 'option = expert' for?

TIA
