That extension is for Gnome-Shell and probably wouldn't work in Classic due to using different Window Managers.
When you installed Gnome from the netinst CD did you do a minimum install or did you select "Debian Desktop Environment" in tasksel?
1). To keep things simple, I just now purged gnome-shell-extension-weather.
2). I opted for the full "Debian Desktop Environment" since I have a fast network connection and a great deal of hard drive space.
3). While poking at this a bit more, I did come across this oddity while naviating through gnome-tweak-tool. Note the warning symbol next to the "Shell Theme" selection widget and there are no entries to select. Hmmm...a problem I presume? Since Gnome is an unfamilar environment for me, I have no clue about how to tackle this.
I'll add that compared to KDE (and KDE4 in particular), setting preferences presents a much more spartan set of choices. Since I've been using KDE for almost 15 years, the vast amount of choices isn't overwhelming to me. I can see the appeal of Gnome's more limited choices especially for those with a Windows background.
Distribution: Debian Wheezy, Jessie, Sid/Experimental, playing with LFS.

Gnome classic doesn't use the "shell theme" so it shouldn't have any effect unless you are in Gnome-Shell. ON a standard Debian install, Gnome shell doesn;t have anything but the standard theme anyway so there would be no other selection to make.

Well...I think I'll walk away from this tiny annoyance for now. It's getting late (or early) here in the states and perhaps some rest will give me a fresh perspective on the matter. Your assistance is very much appreciated.
In realty, Texas weather is the same day after day, week after week (cloudless, hot and dry) so I'm not missing much by not seeing the conditions on the panel.
