Debian scanning for SATA-drives that do not exist..

Hi all...

I'm new to Debian, been using gentoo for a while now and thought I'd give Debian a try.

Everything works perfectly (I love aptitude ). I have one problem though.
I have a 250G SATA drive wich is currently hosting winxp and debian.
In debian the disk is /dev/hde, no disk is connected to what would be /dev/hdc but when the system boots I get a 45 sec. lockup while the system is searching for hdc, wich doesn't exist.

Code:
hdc: no response (status = 0xfe), resetting drive
hdc: no response (status = 0xfe)
After that, the system boots normally. This is really anoying, I've been probing the forums and tried adding:

Code:
append="hdc=noprobe"
and

Code:
append="hdc=none"
in /etc/lilo.conf as suggested by some posts, none of them worked. Instead i get:

Code:
ide_core: Unknown parameter `"options=hdc=noprobe hdc=none"'
As I've said before, this doesn't break my system but it gives me a boot-time of approx. 2 minutes=baaad =)
Any suggestions?

solution

Okay, I'll post the solution(s)...

1. open '/etc/lilo.conf' in your favourite texteditor, I use 'jed', I'll paste my lilo.conf for you to enjoy =)
Code:
#boot - mbr
boot=/dev/hde

#root-partition
root=/dev/hde8

#misc settings
delay=200
prompt
vga=normal
append="ignore=hdc"

#start of base configuration
default=Linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7
        label=Linux
        read-only

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-compact-test
        label=Linux.test.compact
        read-only

other=/dev/hde1
        label=WindowsXP
See the line 'append="ignore=hdc"'? This tells the kernel not to probe channel1 of the sATA controller.
And presto! Boot-time is back to normal!

ok, i can't find a specific grub command like lilo "append," but i assume that i can just add the "ignore=hdg" to the kernel specfication.

You are correct in your assumption.

ok, i tried changing my grub boot command to this

Code:
kernel		/vmlinuz-2.4.26-1-386 root=/dev/hde2 ro ignore=hdg
but my system is still trying to detect hdg on boot. i also tried

Code:
initrd		/initrd.img-2.4.26-1-386 ignore=hdg
but that didn't work either. what am i doing wrong?

try changing "ignore=hdg" to "hdg=none"
