Appearance?

It is the default look that KDE, GNOME would give you. You can tweak it the way you want to.
Of course, Debian doesn't have the GUI thingy and the power of YaST, but Debian is far more customizable.

Debian is the most stable Linux ever made..you must be knowing that.
The software in the Debian CDs / DVDs is rigourously tested and maintained for an ideal operating system on Production Machines / Servers.

Debian is completely free, while SuSE is not.

Debian is not at all user-friendly during the installation period.
Debian is quite easy to maintain, so once installed, it is user-friendly.

But the Text-Based installer of Debian , compared to the Graphic Installer of SuSE is a minus.

It also goes by your personal choice whether you like Red-Hat Based Linux (that use the RPM packages) or else the Debian ones...(.DEB files.)

There is a lot more of comparison to be made.
But I am quite lazy to make all those lengthy posts.

I will link you to some good articles about both Debian and SuSE (how powerful both of them are) after doing some research on the subject.

Here at LQ, many people have posted Reviews --their opinions, what pros and cons they found in the distros, etc.

Take a look at them.

TL,

I haven't got thru all the reviews of Debian/Suse comparisons. But since this is a short answer anyway, I'll write it down for you.

Please bear in mind that Debian and Suse distros are very different in nature. Suse attempts to offer you a complete installation where you have to do as little as possible. Insert a CD, and wait until it is installed. It attempts to install as much supports for peripherals and hardware as possible.

Debian on the other hand offers much more flexibility, and as a result requires more decisions and actions.

It might not be a question of better/worse, but it is *different*.

Knoppix is based on Debian, but highly customized to do automatic hardware detection and driver installations. And in addition to make it as smooth as possible to boot from CD and retain access to the existing installation which might be present on the hard disk. Which is not an easy task at all!

Knoppix is *also* available as an installable distribution. I don't know it, but I can imagine that it brings most of the features available on CD to the permanent installation on hard disk.

I have just the opposite thing, that this thread started out as. I have downloaded 3.1r0a DVDs, 3 times and only get like 392Mb and 130 Mb.

What URL did you download the big ones from? I thought I was at the Debian home, But something is not quite right with these downloads.

I had to download with a windows 98SE machine running Mozilla 1.7.12, The Mozilla download manager shows the smaller total, then achieves that small size. I had it save to a file I made with windows explorer, on the hard drive. I had a high speed connection of Charter Cable.

You need to use filezilla to download from ftp.
Or you may try this site:
ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/

Thanks TigerLinux
Where do I get filezilla? I have never heard of that. Is it like a plug-in for Mozilla or what? I will try it Monday, when I can get back to the high speed.

Get filezilla from here http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=21558
and install in windows.

pick one of the ftp from here
http://www.novell.com/products/linux...t_mirrors.html

let filezilla find the ftp ,
do a bit drag and drop to download,
for file >2GB, it is better to save it on ntfs partition instead of fat32.

without filezilla, you can try to directly download from ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/

if you want suse 10.0, the ftp of perth australia, warwick UK are fast.

Downloading such Huge files with the Mozilla Download Manager, or for instance any Browser is very RISKY.

These download managers are meant for small files.
They don't support resume features.

So suppose for any reason, you have to interrupt the download, you will have to start all over again.

File Zilla is good when you want to download from FTPs.

I found the following download Manager from the Debian Download Section. They recommend it.

Fresh Download Manager.

Moreover, if you are on Linux, I recommend wget, curl or the Graphical Kget.

I just told you the safety precautions you need to take.
After all..Prevention is better than cure.

You will be quite frustrated when your Downloads get corrupted. (MD5/ SHA1 sums don't match.)
Firefox can't resume downloads. So I prefer using a Download manager with resume support (at least.)
