connecting sarge to the internet

Hi

i'm new to debian , came from redhat.
a script wich works fine with redhat9/centos3 doesnt work with
sarge.


tail /var/log/messages
/dev/pts2 device not found
modem hangup.


please help

A bit more information would be useful.

Modem make, model, port connected to, hard or softmodem, method of ppp dialup for a start...
