Hence I am unable to install any software obviously while also unable to edit this file.
As when I try to do
Code:
kate /etc/apt/sources.list
I get the following error message :
Code:
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
No protocol specified
kate: cannot connect to X server :0
Same error with Dolphin command, I am working in terminal as root with "su" command while I am using Debian Wheezy.
Btw, it seems that my IP is blocked at the debian forum (apparently my ISP is blacklisted), any way I could become a member there?
which op cannot access, because the sources.list is commented out.
but nano should already be installed. it is on +90% of all linux distros.
if not, you can use ed or vi or sed. if you succeed using them, welcome to the advanced level!
but the other error sounds weird; i suspect more problems are coming once you've activated your repos.
you can always "echo $YOUR_REPO >> /etc/apt/sources.list" as root (careful, it's '>>' for append, single '>' will overwrite the file, make a backup if not feeling adventurous).
===========================================
btw those two repos are just for updates; if they are the only ones in your sources.list, you're missing something important there.
===========================================
also, running graphical programs as root is asking for trouble. Don't do that if you can help it (and you can ALWAYS help it).

Nice catch Ondoho, thank you.
There's always vim, which should be present, but it can be challenging as the interface is hardly transparent. I've just recently started to feel competent--not expert, just competent--with it.
You can do a lot navigating with the arrow keys using only these commands: x to delete text one character at a time and i to insert text. That should be enough to uncomment lines in sources.list.
