configuring KDM

I just installed KDM after uninstalling gnome from my Debian Sarge system using Synaptic and configuring KDM seems to be taking a very long time. If I have a mobile Athlon XP 2200+ with 512 mb of ram and a 132 mb (approximate size) swap partition how long should the configuring of KDM take? I want to know this because it seems to be going very slowly. I hope it hasn't locked up.

All I know is that it takes more than 5 min :-P

Just wait and see.. if it takes more than 20-30 min, reboot and try again :-)

If you just removed gdm and installed kdm then it should only take minutes at the most and this assumes you have a slow connection to the internet. The actual unpacking and install/configure of kdm should only take seconds on your machine it is more than fast enough.

It has been ten to twenty minutes now and Synaptic says it's still running. What is wrong with my computer?

I don't remember how long it took me to install KDM. I run fluxbox nowadays.

.. Just reboot?

I doubt if it is anything wrong with the computer, the site where you are getting it from may be hanging but apt should have timed out by now if that was the case. Try canceling the operation of Synaptic then open a console window and use su and enter your root password to become root and apt-get install kdm then you will have some reasonable output to post to see what is going on if you have problems. Or does synaptic actually show you what is apt is doing when it runs? If so can you cut'n'paste the output here so we can see it.
